- I think you mis-remember the details. The Meijer store here had a policy
- that they called something like "Forced Compliance", which meant that
- the security guards wrestled to the ground anybody who gave them the
- least guff about being accused of shoplifting.
-
- In the case in question, the man in question wanted to make sure that
- he got batteries of the right size, so he brought the OLD, DEAD batteries
- into the store with him. These batteries were of a brand NOT EVEN
- CARRIED by Meijer. The guards saw him pocket his own batteries; he
- paid for the new ones (either that, or he could not find the size he
- needed--anyways there is absolutely no doubt that he stole nothing).
- When they stopped him, they did not even let him explain, but threw
- him to the ground and broke his neck.
-
- He won $5.4 million in a jury award. Meijer then settled for a somewhat
- lesser amount (they won't say how much) so that neither side would have
- to go through appeals.
-
- With the money, his sons no longer have to spend their days taking care
- of their father, but are finally getting to go to college as they
- would have done earlier if it had not been for Meijer's policy.
