  15. Oh, if the world were so simple! Although credit card applications can
  16. be big money makers for banks, consumer banking in general is not. I
  17. think many banks wish you would take your checking elsewhere, unless
  18. you are leaving thousands of dollars in your checking account. With
  19. the advent of ATMs, lowering  banks' transaction costs and non-return
  20. of checks, lowering postage costs, profit margins may have improved
