  26.      The Clinton Administration is intending to nominate MARIO
  27. BAEZA for the position of assistant secretary of state for Inter-
  28. American affairs (the position  currently held by Bernard
  29. Aronson.)
  30.  
  31.      The Cuban American National Foundation in Miami has mounted
  32. a campaign to stop this nomination. The CANF opposes Baeza
  33. because he is not well-known in the Miami Cuban-AMerican
  34. community and will not be susceptible to influence by the CANF.
  35. In Miami, the Foundation attack on Baeza includes racism (Baeza
  36. is Afro-Cuban) and red-baiting. The CANF has proposed its own
  37. candidate from the extreme right wing, Simon Ferro.

  39.      The nominee will most likely be named today or Monday. It is
  40. critical to flood the State Dept. and the White House with calls
  41. and letter of support for Baeza.

  53. Senator Bill Bradley of NJ is playing a critical role in support
  54. of the CANF candidate and in opposition to Baeza. Calls and
  55. letter to his office, particularly from New Jersey residents, are
  56. especially important.

  64. The Congressional Black Caucus has already mobilized in support
  65. of Baeza'a nomination. On the other hand, Congressman Robert
  66. Torricelli strongly opposes Baeza--and Baeza lives in
  67. Torricelli's district. This is another case of Torricelli
  68. supporting the agenda of CANF (could it be the PAC money?) over
  69. the interests of his own constituents.
