- I would like to run some applications that need Unix. I own a PowerBook
- 170 and have found that the applications run on A/UX. I have read the
- FAQ on this newsgroup which states that A/UX 3.0 will not run on the
- PowerBooks. Would previous versions run ? I contacted Apple who said that
- A/UX is not SUPPORTED on a PowerBook, which is a little different from
- not running on a PowerBook. My idea would be to install 8 meg into the
- PowerBook (minimum A/UX req.) and have A/UX reside on a large external SCSI
- drive. Has anyone actually tried this ? Is there some absolute hardware
- reason preventing the PowerBooks from running A/UX, or do the memory/disk
- configurations of the PowerBooks just make it a _really_bad_idea ? I
- realize that the 8 meg would be really close to the edge, but I would
- accept the performance degradation (as long as it didn't frequently crash)
- in return for not having to give up a portable mac or go to another
- hardware/software vendor to run Unix. The applications would be quite
- large, needing a couple of meg to run. Can anyone give me a reason why
- it wouldn't work, or if you've tried it were you successful ?
