  11. o I used the "from scratch" 3.2.3 tape.
  12. o I did a complete replacement install.
  13. o I picked and chose what to install.  I specifically did NOT install the
  14.   info database.
  15. o There are over 500 PTF's on the 3.2.3 tape.
  16. o It took about 3 hours to do the initial installation on a 530 with 8mm tape.
  17. o I also installed U409579 because I heard that it fixes the problem where
  18.   qdaemon eats CPU time.
  19. o The U409579 tape contained vast numbers of PTF's, some of which had already
  20.   been installed with 3.2.3, many of which are totally unrelated to qdaemon
  21.   (e.g. updates to X11!?).
  22. o It took about 4 hours to install the U409579 tape.
  23. o Hidden in a section of notes at the BACK of the sheaf of papers which came
  24.   with the U409579 tape, among several notes which are simply incomprehensible,
  25.   is a note which warns that a particular PTF on the tape absolutely must be
  26.   installed first.  Thanks.
  27. o When all the updates had been installed (over 800), I was left with the
  28.   following problems:
  29.     o xlc was at version 1.2.0.0, the version shipped with AIX 3.2.0 last Feb.
  30.       This version has several unpleasant bugs.
  31.     o graPHIGS did not install correctly.
  32.     o I had 90MB of info database in my /usr filesystem although I had
  33.       explicitly excluded its installation.
  34.     o I had over 800 directories of the form "inst_<ptf number>" in my /usr
  35.       filesystem although I had committed all of the updates.
  36.     o Filesystem sizes were:
  37.         /       8 MB
  38.     /usr     330 MB
  39.         /var      12 MB
  40.         /tmp      12 MB
  41. o Other than those problems, AIX 3.2.3 plus U409579 appears to work fine.
