- I am currently seeking any and all information about LAN-based
- communications options between the RS/6000 and the IBM 4680 Point of Sale
- system.
-
- What I need specifically is:
- o File transfer ability. Bidirectional preferred, 4680->RS/6k
- required. Ability to test existence of a 4680 file from the
- RS/6k would be an unending delight.
- o LAN speed. The file sizes and time window preclude serial or
- sync/serial options.
- o Reasonable cost. I have an immediate need for this solution in
- several hundred installations, with a potential requirement for
- thousands.
-
- What I would like to see:
- o Best of all worlds would be PC-LAN client for the RS/6000. The
- 4680 currently acts as a PC-LAN server via netbios. This
- solution would not necessitate any program or environment
- changes in the 4680, and would therefore involve minimal
- intrusion into the mission-critical POS device.
- o Second best would be a TCP/IP stack for the 4680. IBM makes one
- but last I checked it cost megabucks. Anybody else make one?
- o Third choice would be custom client(RS6k)/server(4680) nodes
- that implement any file xfer protocol using netbios over
- token ring or ethernet. Last choice would be the same
- functionality via any protocol on LAN media.
-
- What I am willing to pay:
-
- I'll leave this one dangling for the moment. Suffice it to say that I am
- looking for commercial software and have no expectation of a net freebie.
- I am willing to pay up to the amount that it currently costs me to NOT
- have this connectivity (which is less than any solution IBM has offered
- me.)
-
- In the event that a commercial package does not exist within these
- parameters, I am willing to create one, and will be shopping for a
- contractor to write it. If you have the requisite skills and
- availability, I would like to hear from you.
