- On the other hand, with freely available ptf:s the situation which
- occured to me probably wouldn't happen. We had AIX 3.2.2 installed
- a couple of weeks ago. When I tried to compile ghostscript it
- crystalized a bug in the optimization in the xlc compiler. After
- asking on usenet, I was told that there is a patch that fixed this
- problem, and someone graciously let me download this patch by
- anonymous ftp.
-
- The really annoying part of the story is that the date of this
- patch is:
-
- > what /usr/lpp/xlc/bin/xlcentry
- 5601-249 (c) COPYRIGHT IBM CORP. 1989,1991.

- Now, have a look at the date of this patch. That's right. August 1992.
- Why wasn't this patch incorporated in the upgrade to AIX 3.2.2 that
- I received two weeks ago? My conjecture is that IBM is too big and has
- too big a turnover time. The diffusion time of code from the programmers
- to the customer systems is far too long. IBM really need to cut down
- its bureaucracy, and make use of the fact that a large part of its
- customers are connected to internet.
