  13. Hey, everybody - I'm looking for some recommendations/opinions about
  14. some UNIX hardware/software combinations to help out a friend.  Please
  15. reply to this posting or send mail to kavi@usl.com (that's me, too).

  17. My friend is considering of buying a minicomputer and CAD workstation. 
  18. They focussed only on RISC based machines and narrowed down their choices 
  19. to SUN and HP computers to solve their scientific/engineering problems.
  20. They are looking at sparc station 10 models 031, 041, and 052 
  21. for SUN and HP7100/735
  22.  
  23. Any opinions/recommendations on the following are appreciated:
  24.  
  25.  - Networking: they already have Novell LAN on ethernet connecting
  26.    DOS machines and ethernet connecting Apollo DN 3000. Which server, 
  27.    SUN or HP would make the complete networking easier?
  28.  
  29.  - Overall performance: which machine can be relied on for better and
  30.    more stable performance?
  31.  
  32.  - Openness of architecture: which platform will be easier to repair by
  33.    a third party or to fix the bugs in the system? (if, in the future, they 
  34.    do not have a maintenace contract with the respective vendor).
  35.  
  36.  - Availability and average cost of 3rd party software (compilers and 
  37.    applications): Which computer offers better flexibility and cheaper 
  38.    solutions for these?
  39.  
  40.  - Future upgrades (both software and hardware): which platform
  41.    would give the better solution for upgrading the selected model
  42.    with respect to hardware (better cpu and higher speed) and
  43.    software (OS and compilers?)
