- Solaris 2 is not expensive on Suns. It may well cost USD$1000 for the Intel
- machines, but pricing is not final, and the product is not shipping to end
- users yet.
-
- Neither is NT.
-
- Windows/NT beta CD costs USD$100, but the end-user release of Solaris 2.1 for
- Sun costs less than that. This is a fairly irrelevant point.

-
- Software for Sun/Solaris/OpenWindows costs more than Intel/MS-DOS/MS-Windows.
- Workstations are more expensive than PCs generally, because:
- 1) It costs more to produce/distribute/sell them
- 2) Smaller market
- 3) More functionality
-
- If you don't think that workstations are better than MS-DOS and MS-Windows,
- please hit 'n'. This is a needless argument.

-
- If a PC suits your task, go for it! If you find PCs inadequate, and you are
- stuck with UNIX :-), then until more people buy workstations, things will be
- more expensive.

- Sun are awake and listening. Software is priced against the perceived
- competition. Sun do not see PCs as the competition. I'm not Sun, and I can't
- tell you the reason, but sit and compare the two platforms, and you will see
- why workstation users don't by PCs and vice versa.
-
- Solaris for x86 will not cost USD$200, most probably. If you think it will,
- then you are deluded. SunSoft _HAVE_ to make money from this. A certain level
- of distribution and support will be included with the product. A 3 tier
- selling model will be used. People need to get paid for their work.
