- We have been using Liken for about 6 weeks. We have several Sun users
- who are also committed to Macs for some applications (in fact one really
- runs two completely different systems, Mac or Sun, at his different
- research locations). Everyone has been extremely impressed with Liken.
- The heaviest Mac user was immediately convinced he would no longer
- have to buy Macs, but would expand his lab with LXs (hopefully Liken
- will be running under Solaris 2.1 soon) and Liken.
-
- Performance? On my SS/2 it generally gives me SE/30 performance
- on most applications. I found it much faster than that on Cricket Graph,
- and a bit slower on Hypercard. Overall it is a completely usable system.
- I also run SoftPC for DOS emulation and was astounded that Liken runs
- Mac applications much faster than SoftPC runs PC apps. I keep a Liken
- window open on my machine and switch between Mac and Sun with ease.
-
- Limitations? Yes there are several. No system 7 (promised in March), no
- color (ditto March), it can't really take adavantage of hardware (no serial
- port, no sound), but it will use your floppy (1.44mb only), CD, and getting
- it to print on your SparcPrinter is as simple as dragging a LaserPrep and
- LaserWriter file to your System folder.
-
- We are using the floating license and it works very nicely. There is a
- shared disk that all user can access and each user can set up their own
- personal desktop with attached Unix and Mac filesystems. Works very nicely.
-
- I haven't run across many pieces of software that do as much as they promise. This is one of them.
-
- Disclaimer: I have no financial or other interest in XSI. I just think they
- have done a great job in freeing Sun users from ever having to touch
- a Mac again. For us this will speed our migration to Sun hardware.
