  10. We have an application that has the following characteristics
  11.  
  12. -  Will have 2 PCs at remote locations connected via phone line.
  13. -  Will need to download images as well as data.
  14.  
  15. There is a suggestion that we use fax/modems. The reason being that
  16. we can make use of any compression that the fax hardware does and also
  17. that the central (server) site will be able to receive images from other
  18. sites with only paper fax machines. The questions that arise are :
  19.  
  20. -  Do fax cards incorporate data compression? What kind? How effective?
  21. -  Is there available fax software (esp Windows based) that will allow
  22.    a program to operate the fax card via API or a software library? I
  23.    may also have to be able to obtain the image data for some image 
  24.    processing.
  25. -  Given the second point above, preferbly should incorporate scanner
  26.    support also in the API.
  27. -  I assume that I can easily use the fax card alternately as a fax
  28.    machine as well as a data modem. Can I confirm this?
  29. -  If I use the fax card as a data modem, can I also make use of
  30.    hardware compression facility? How? 
  31. -  Can I manipulate the resolution of the fax? ie can I have 150dpi,
  32.    300dpi, 100dpi etc fax?

  34. I certainly hope someone can answer these questions as well as provide
  35. recommendations for products. Any advice is appreciated - as you may
  36. guess, I know nothing about fax technology and certainly nothing about
  37. PC Fax applications.
