I would like to inform you of some idiosynchrasies with my system (I'm still trying to figure out how to use ctrl-x/ctrl-c to save my file to the newsgroup with Crosstalk) System: 486DX2-66V Western Digital 340 MB HD 16 MB RAM (4x4MB 70ns) Telepath 14.4/9600 Fax/Modem (w/Crosstalk/WinfaxPro/QModem) Archive 120 MB tape drive (w/QIC stream for DOS) ATI Ultra Pro 1572FS 15" flat-screen monitor tower casing autoexec.bat: @ECHO OFF PROMPT $P$G C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /E:8192 4096 4096 SET MOUSE=C:\MSMOUSE C:\MSMOUSE\MOUSE PATH=C:\EXCEL;C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;D:\;C:\MACH32;C:\PKZIP; C:\CORELDRW MKDIR D:\TEMP SET TEMP=D:\TEMP SET TMP=D:\TEMP DOSKEY WIN config.sys: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\RAMDRIVE.SYS 6144 /E DOS=HIGH,UMB STACKS=9,256 FILES=30 BUFFERS=20 system.ini display.drv=M32-86.drv (under [boot]) display.drv=mach32 Driver (under [boot.description]) 1. Are these appropriate settings for the above files? The smartdrive and ramdrive parameters were derived from the manuals. I wish to allocate 6MB to a RAMdrive, reserve 6MB for Windows' consumption, and allocate 4MB to Smartdrive. Please help me if you can with these settings. I simply want Windows to run as optimally as possible. 2. The display is set at 800x600 using the ATI icon setup. Several things have happened with the display: a) During startup, several (3-4) flickers occur b) When exiting to DOS via the MSDOS Prompt icon in the Main Group flickering occurs c) When returning to Windows either from this DOS exit or from an application ran from file manager, the icons, pointer, and the gray boxes in the upper-left of all windows go black. (The icons are perfect black squares as is the other items) d) Other times when exiting in the same manner mentioned above the screen is locked up and somewhat garbled. I realize that the drivers are not yet perfected by ATI. What files of mine need replacing when the corrected versions come out? 3. How do I go about ensuring that I receive the Winfax Pro and Crosstalk upgrades? And they are free? 4. What other software upgrades should I know about? 5. I have Word 2.0 for Windows. I heard of a 2.0c. Is Gateway supposed to ship this free of charge also? (I chose Word for my free MS application) 6. Is there an upgrade for QICstream? QModem? 7. Are supplementary/regular manuals included with the free upgrades? 8. Can the ATI Ultra Pro produce 24bit color at any resolution? Which? 9. If possible, can you please explain the 19200, 38400, 57600bps options included with Crosstalk for Windows? I call at 9600, connect, and continue on. I tried changing to 19200 and it did speed things up considerably. What are these higher rates used for? 10. As mentioned in the beginning, I need to use a ctrl-x ctrl-c combination to save a file to the newsgroups. (I use the emacs editor, and am admittedly a novice) Is there a way to write to the newsgroups with Crosstalk for Windows? I greatly appreciate any help you can provide for me. And please, pass this on to others who also may be able to assist me. Thank you very much, Glen Pawelski University of WIsconsin-Milwaukee Department of Geography gap@csd4.csd.uwm.edu
