- Well I've had my fair share of Gateway disappointments over the last 3 weeks.
- I've got my system in a sort of usable mode right now. Let me share some of the
- problems and solutions I have dealt with.
-
- My config. Gateway 66V 8M 64K cache
- With Ultrastor 34F(local bus SCSI controller) and Toshiba HD.
- Proaudio Spectrum Card
- NE2000(for use with FTP Software)
-
- Borland Brief 3.1:
- Brief causes a divide by zero error and causes the system to occasionally
- hang. Borland has a patch. With the patch, Brief works in DOS but hangs in
- Windows startup. Borland is looking into it. Get the patch via Borland's
- Fax server. 1-800-822-4269 Doc #1047

- QEMM:
- Have encountered QEMM problems with NE2000 software. Windows complains of
- not having enough memory. There's plenty. Use HIMEM and Windows comes up fine.
- Mach32 install program hangs in custom monitor mode if QEMM is used. It
- works fine with HIMEM.
-
- Proaudio Spectrum Card:
- If the DOS driver is loaded, Windows consistently complains of corrupt swap
- file. Windows will come up but will not allow permanent swap space. Exclude
- the sound driver(in DOS) and Windows works fine with card.
-
- ATI Ultra Pro card:
- If your screen is not being refreshed properly and lines across the screens
- in both DOS and Windows mode, you may have a bad card. It started on mine with
- a small line across my cursor and then it got progressively worse as I would
- lose items on menus. Gateway sent me a replacement card. And it works fine now
- with the exception of Mach32 conflicts with QEMM.
-
- For those of us who like the Gateway system in "general" but have had no
- support. I suggest a problem/solution posting of this nature so you won't have
- to waste time waiting for Gateway TS(if you get thru). I have suggested to
- Gateway's Customer Service and Tech Support that they make available some
- incompatibility issues and solutions(workarounds) available to those of us
- who have these systems so as to alleviate the support problem. So far there's
- been no response. Until Gateway publishes such a document, I encourage Gateway
- users to post any problems and solutions that they have. So that it would save
- all of us time in trying to figure out the fix(with no support from Gateway)
- ourselves.
-
- I think Gateway should issue an apology to its current customers explaining the
- shipping situation and tech support situation. I believe Gateway owes its
- customers an official statement. They need to do some damage control before it
- gets out of hand. These support problems are SIMPLY NOT ACCEPTABLE to business
- users who depend on the systems for their work. NO MATTER WHAT THE EXCUSE IS.
- Otherwise, their major advertisements will be for naught shortly.
