-
- No I don't thankyou. But I made a mistake in the original posting!
-
- It really was:
- SIMM Salesman: If your m/mboard can use 4Meg SIMMs it can use
- 3-chip SIMMs
- m/board guy: Your m/board can't use 3-chip SIMMs
- m/board docs: This m/board can use 4 Meg SIMMs (no mention of
- 3-chip or 9-chip).
-
- So there's an inconsistency here.
-
- People have been talking about the BIOS making a difference to the refresh,
- but I would have thought it's the CHIPSET we should be looking at? After
- all that's what controls the refresh, caching etc.
-
- I took the top 4 Megs of (3-chip) SIMMs out of my machine leaving only
- 9-chip ones in there and the crashes have stopped, from which I conclude
- that either (a) My chipset doesn't like 3-chip SIMMs, or (b) there is
- a fault in the m/board which shows up when both banks are populated.
-
- I have a UMC chipset and the m/board is 386DX/40 with 64k cache, AMI BIOS
- dated 12/12/91. If anyone else has had similar problems I'd like to hear
- about them. We could draw up a list of m/boards and chipsets that
- are compatible and incompatible with various bits and pieces. Then we'd
- have the beginnings of an FAQ.
