  20. No I don't thankyou.  But I made a mistake in the original posting!

  23.     SIMM Salesman: If your m/mboard can use 4Meg SIMMs it can use
  24.                    3-chip SIMMs
  25.     m/board guy:   Your m/board can't use 3-chip SIMMs
  26.     m/board docs:  This m/board can use 4 Meg SIMMs (no mention of
  27.                    3-chip or 9-chip).

  29. So there's an inconsistency here.

  31. People have been talking about the BIOS making a difference to the refresh,
  32. but I would have thought it's the CHIPSET we should be looking at?  After
  33. all that's what controls the refresh, caching etc.

  35. I took the top 4 Megs of (3-chip) SIMMs out of my machine leaving only
  36. 9-chip ones in there and the crashes have stopped, from which I conclude
  37. that either (a) My chipset doesn't like 3-chip SIMMs, or (b) there is
  38. a fault in the m/board which shows up when both banks are populated.

  40. I have a UMC chipset and the m/board is 386DX/40 with 64k cache, AMI BIOS
  41. dated 12/12/91.  If anyone else has had similar problems I'd like to hear
  42. about them.  We could draw up a list of m/boards and chipsets that
  43. are compatible and incompatible with various bits and pieces.  Then we'd
  44. have the beginnings of an FAQ.
