-
- I ran NSR for about a year and a half and it did a pretty good
- job. I have to admit that when I got a chance to play with Legato's
- stuff at a trade show, I wondered why Digital licensed it, then hacked
- it up so much. Too much "added value" for my taste, especially when
- Legato already had a working X interface and stacker support while
- NSR didn't.
-
- On the plus side, I found it pretty reliable and never had
- much in the way of trouble with it. I spent one frustrating night
- (and I mean all night) because the indices got too big and filled
- the disk and there was no room for the temporary storage required
- to pack down the indices. OOps. I had to do tars and compresses
- and NFS kludgery until I was blue in the face.
-
- It ran reliably for a year and a half, and as far as I am
- concerned, it paid for itself in my time-savings. Certainly it
- made my co-workers happy because without it backups never got
- done at all. If I were looking for a backup solution today, I'd
- first off take a look at U of Maryland's "Amanda" system and see
- if I could make that work (the price is right) and if not, I'd
- look at Legato's networker or Backup.Unet from that bunch with
- the UNIX wars posters. No offense to DEC, but since Legato and
- so on make their entire livings based on that product set, I
- think they're more likely to turn around bugs and keep the
- product up with the joneses.
