  18.     I ran NSR for about a year and a half and it did a pretty good
  19. job. I have to admit that when I got a chance to play with Legato's
  20. stuff at a trade show, I wondered why Digital licensed it, then hacked
  21. it up so much. Too much "added value" for my taste, especially when
  22. Legato already had a working X interface and stacker support while
  23. NSR didn't.

  25.     On the plus side, I found it pretty reliable and never had
  26. much in the way of trouble with it. I spent one frustrating night
  27. (and I mean all night) because the indices got too big and filled
  28. the disk and there was no room for the temporary storage required
  29. to pack down the indices. OOps. I had to do tars and compresses
  30. and NFS kludgery until I was blue in the face.

  32.     It ran reliably for a year and a half, and as far as I am
  33. concerned, it paid for itself in my time-savings. Certainly it
  34. made my co-workers happy because without it backups never got
  35. done at all. If I were looking for a backup solution today, I'd
  36. first off take a look at U of Maryland's "Amanda" system and see
  37. if I could make that work (the price is right) and if not, I'd
  38. look at Legato's networker or Backup.Unet from that bunch with
  39. the UNIX wars posters. No offense to DEC, but since Legato and
  40. so on make their entire livings based on that product set, I
  41. think they're more likely to turn around bugs and keep the
  42. product up with the joneses.
