- Sorry for a *big* delay in posting this but...
-
- Well I've got the DeskJet 500C (that's the one with the single print cartridge)
- running the Ace printer drivers - which are incidentally supplied by Watford if
- you buy the drivers from them - on a RiscOS 3.00 A5000 (4 Meg).
-
- The standard Ace drivers don't change the way you print from the desktop (ie
- no automatic spooling) but they do hack about with the Laser Jet drivers. After
- installing the DeskJetC printer driver, you get two new print options over and
- above the normal DeskJet+ driver, which are Colour small halftone and Colour
- dithered - the halftone gives you 'solider' colours, but the dithering gives
- better results for colour pictures (GIFs etc.).
-
- The best way that I've found to print colour pictures on the thing is to use
- !ChangeFSI to convert the pictures using a ratio of at least 2:1, with Lighten
- and Gamma correction of 2.2, then push these into !Draw and shrink them back
- down to a printable size. The output is quite good using the Colour Dithered
- option. However, if you try something like a graduation in !Draw, and print it
- (using either colour print mode) then you only get about 4 bands, which is
- useless really - maybe its me, I don't know...
-
- What is *really* annoying is that a friend of mine, who recently purchased a
- 486 PC, saw my printer and bought one exactly the same, and using his Windows
- drivers promptly made mine look like a toy. The output from Corel Draw is
- fantastic. There appears to be a problem here...
-
- Another interesting point is that if you use a 500C then you can actually put
- the same piece of paper through the printer twice, and this allows you to do
- a Black pass and a separate CMY pass, and the two align to within 1mm. On the
- windows driver they align to within 5mm (not a lot of good really!). I think
- I'm right in saying that the more expensive Ace driver can actually do the
- separations for you, rather than having to delete the bits out of the draw
- file that don't go with the pass you're doing...
-
- I hope this has been of some interest/use to people.
