  11. Here are my experiences with the Adaptec 1542B and OS/2 2.0 GA.

  13. I also had problems with the Adaptec 1542b.  The system gave me an
  14. "Exception in device driver AHA154x$" whenever I tried to boot off
  15. the hard disk.  Figuring there was something wrong with the driver, I
  16. downloaded the beta driver from the Adaptec bulletin board, (408)
  17. 945-7727, booted OS/2 off the floppy, copied the old driver to a
  18. different name, copied the new driver over the old driver, then
  19. rebooted from the hard disk. OS/2 finally came up and started the
  20. tutorial.  I went through the tutorial and when it was done it gave
  21. me a blank gray screen with a normal mouse pointer in the middle (no
  22. wait icon).  Meanwhile, the hard disk was getting hammered on.  I
  23. waited several minutes, then started hitting mouse buttons -- nothing
  24. changed.  I let it run for about 45 minutes.  I finally gave up and
  25. rebooted.

  27. It then brought up the shell and I was able to run the solitaire
  28. game.  However, when I exited that, it hung up again.

  30. I talked to IBM tech support.  The first guy I talked to was very
  31. unhelpful.  I told him my problems with the original driver and how
  32. I'd downloaded the beta version and that was better, but it still
  33. hung up.  He told me they only support "their" drivers.  So I told
  34. him fine, but that one doesn't work at all.  He said he'd have
  35. someone call me back the next day.  They didn't.  He did call me back
  36. the following Monday and apologized.  I gave him some more
  37. information.  He said there were about 20 calls in with the same
  38. symptoms and thus far no solutions, so it didn't look too good.  So
  39. by this time I'm about ready to toss OS/2.

  41. However, the following morning I got a call from a different guy.  He
  42. said I should download the latest driver from the Adaptec bulletin
  43. board.  I told him I already had but the other bozo told me it wasn't
  44. supported.  He said no, he was wrong and he would talk to the other
  45. guy about it.  The new guy said my problem was I should have let OS/2
  46. grind away on my disk, that it was doing some kind of normal cleanup
  47. after installation.  However, he did say he'd never seen it take
  48. longer than about 15 or 20 minutes.  (I have a 510MB partition, maybe
  49. it takes longer for a large disk.  I did run CHKDSK from the floppy
  50. and that took about 2 hours so I guess that's reasonable.)

  52. He then said I should NOT use an HPFS partition -- I should remove
  53. the HPFS partition, re-run fdisk and make it a FAT partition and
  54. re-install OS/2 from the floppies.  I haven't done this yet  -- one
  55. of my reasons for going to OS/2 was HPFS.  I may wait for the real
  56. 2.1 to come out.
