- : Background: I have a 486 with a Laserjet IIIP with postscript cartridge.
- : So I have 2 printer icons on my desktop, one for plain LJ IIIP and the
- : other for LJ IIIP with postscript (with the appropriate printer driver
- : selected is basically the difference. Both defined as using LPT1). The
- : plain LJ IIIP is set as default printer. This has worked since the
- : original OS/2 I first bought. And with the service pack installed, it
- : still worked fine. Am still using OS/2 with Service Pack (not 2.1 beta).
- : In fact, I printing Xmas stuff right on Xmas day and it worked fine.
- : This was the last time I used it.
- :
- : Problem: This week, I tried to print something and it won't print.
- : Finally, it came back with a message saying "Printer not responding!!
- : Retry?". I checked the printer and it looked ok. I checked everything. I
- : left the LJ IIIP as default printer, checked the settings and the right
- : printer driver was selected and lpt1 was still selected. Nothing has
- : changed. But I tested again and again and nothing even went to the
- : printer cause the light didn't even blink. So as far as OS/2 is
- : concerned, it can't even start talking to the printer. Well good thing I
- : didn't trust OS/2 and installed Boot Manager at the beginning so that I
- : can still boot DOS. (I have to say, I still have to boot DOS every once
- : in awhile cause I'm still finding limitations of OS/2's DOS emulation
- : such that I still need the real thing to run some of my DOS programs. Or
- : somethings under OS/2 just doesn't work like this printer business).
- : (But I do like OS/2 cause I do use it most of the time and only go back
- : to DOS when I just can't do some things at all. I just wish OS/2 will
- : finally clean things up in 2.1 so that I can stay in OS/2 period).
- : Anyways, back to my story. I can still boot DOS and print things fine
- : under DOS, Windows, everything still works fine under DOS. Some of the
- : simplest things that worked under DOS but not OS/2 was something as
- : silly as "echo > prn" and "echo > lpt1:" under the DOS prompt even. Not
- : even using a program. I've checked all my settings for my printer icon.
- : Both icons. Still using LJ IIIP as default so don't have to worry about
- : the PS stuff.

- This is not a unique problem! A friend of mine has just installed OS/2 2.0
- on his i486 with 16MB RAM. He has the same problem using his HP Laserjet
- IIIP (2MB RAM). In his case, the Printer LED blinks for about 5 seconds
- to indicate that something IS transmitted to the printer. But then
- suddenly it stops and after 45 seconds the same error message appears as
- described above. He is very frustrated now, so if anybody knows what's
- going wrong, please answer!
-
- Thanks in advance!
