- Just install GA and apply the service pack (level XR-6055). This will
- bring you to the current released level. There are no additional
- patches that you should apply unless you're having problems. If you
- buy a fresh package today, I believe it will already be at this
- service level. (you can type "syslevel" at a prompt to find out - if
- you have the 32-bit graphics engine installed, you're at XR-6055 or
- better)
-
- Windows 3.1 support is currently only beta code. If you want, you can
- donwload the OS/2 2.1 beta package, which includes it.
-
- CDROM is supported if you have a supported drive and a supported SCSI
- adapter for it. If your drive is non-SCSI, you'll need a custom
- driver. Many can be gotten from the manufacturers or from ftp sites.
- Most of the SCSI adapter/CD-ROM drive combinations are now supported.
-
- ESDI controllers are supported without additional drivers. I know
- this, since many IBM PS/2 systems have ESDI drives, and the install
- program configures for them automatically.

-
- The OS/2 2.1 beta can be downloaded (29 floppy images, I believe) from
- many ftp sites or you can get it (with other stuff) on an IBM DAP CD
- for $15. For the CD, call your local IBM dealer (or 1-800-3IBM-OS2 in
- the USA) for ordering information. You must be a DAP member, but I
- think membership is free, so just sign up when you call.
-
- As for reliability, there are many bugs in the 2.1 beta, but most of
- the bad ones seem to be linked to "upgrading" to it. As with any beta
- code, you should re-format your OS/2 partition before installing beta
- code. Personally, I'm not installing it - I can't afford the problems
- that go along with installing beta code on my only computer.
