- ABIOS:
-
- What is the advantage of ABIOS regarding OS/2 performance? ISA systems
- do not use ABIOS (there is none), do not use BIOS but use native
- drivers loaded in (fast) RAM. So why should ABIOS be superior to a
- native driver?
-
- There could be one advantage: Machine dependant stuff could be put into
- the ABIOS, allowing incompatible hardware without getting into the
- well-known driver problem. But IBM states, their new PS/2 machines with
- preloaded OS/2 do not accept any previous brand of OS/2, neither OS/2
- GA nor the Service Pack. So what about ABIOS?
-
- Concurrent DMA:
-
- Current ISA system usually have just one true DMA client, the floppy
- controller. A bus master adapter is a second client, but what the
- Adaptec does with the ISA bus regarding "bus fairness" (leaving some
- time for floppy, with too little time for slow mainboards in the GA
- driver), the MCA cards have to do also (note the "fairness" setting in
- the machine setup).
-
- Bus-Master DMA:
-
- It is of little help to have an (IBM!) bus mastering SCSI adapter, if
- the adapter doesn't grok how to switch the IBM(!) disk drive into
- synchronous mode. A fast bus doesn't save you from a stupid design.
