- I posted this once before a few weeks ago, but there seems to be a lot
- more traffic on the group lately, so maybe there are more people
- listening. Anyway, can anyone tell me what the following error
- message means?
-
- First, my setup: I'm using a Tri-Star 486/33 EISA (Intel EISA chipset)
- with 16MB RAM and a Data Technology Corp. 3290HD EISA SCSI controller.
- I'm using a 3rd party miniport SCSI driver obtained from the DTC BBS.
- The CDROM is a CD Technology Porta-Drive (basically, a Toshiba XM-3301
- in an external cabinet), and the hard disk is a Maxtor Panther P0-12S
- 1.2GB SCSI.
-
- Anyway, I go through the NT setup procedure by first typing WINNT in
- the \I386 directory of the CDROM. This creates a boot disk and a temp
- file on my hard disk. I then copy the third-party driver renamed as
- SPARE.SYS to both the boot disk and the temporary NT directory. I
- then reboot with the new install boot disk.
-
- At this point, the NT kernel boots and goes into the phase where it
- checks all the FAT partitions on my hard disk (I have three, C:, D:,
- and E:). Here's where it starts to get wierd. First of all, during
- these volume checks, I sometimes get an error message along the lines
- of "Disk error reading FAT 2". This can happen either on D: or E:
- seemingly at random. (Note that MS-DOS CHKDSK and Norton Disk Doctor
- 6.0 report no problems with the FATs).
-
- Now, at this point I get the following messages:
-
- INIT: Created paging file \DosDevices\c:\pagefile.sys [10..60]MB
- CMINIT Warning: Hive 'SOFTWARE' could not be created/loaded.
-
- At this point, the drive access light flashes every ten seconds or so
- for a period of about a minute or two. After that, the system seems
- to be completely locked up.
-
- Due to the "Disk error" message, I tend to suspect that the driver is
- the culprit, but I can't be sure. Does anyone know what the CMINIT
- warning means? What's a "Hive"?
-
- I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.
