- Hello fellow Linuxers:
-
- I'm setting up a LINUX system here for a satellite
- terminal at one of our remote plants. I was given
- a certain dollar amount to upgrade an old XT to a
- system that would run LINUX. Here is what I ended
- up with:
-
- 80386-40 AMD OPTI Chipset motherboard
- 4M RAM SIMM Modules 60 ns
- EGA Graphics Card (From old XT)
- 16 bit MFM/RLL 2FD/2HD Controller Card
- 1.2M 5-1/4" Floppy
- 360K 5-1/4" Floppy (From old XT)
- 20Meg ST-225 RLL Hard Disk (From old XT)
-
- I booted from A1 and A2 with no problems, ran fdisk,
- mkfs, created swap space. I then installed the base
- Linux systems from SLS 0.98pl5-49. I got a couple of
- HD: write_intr errors during the installation so
- I decided to try and install the SLS stuff manually
- The write_intr errors still sporadically happened but
- I managed to get all the stuff installed. I then proceeded
- to create the boot disk, and ran bootdev to set it up.
-
- When I boot from the disk the following happens:
-
- [...]
-
- hda :
- part 1 start 1 size 32775 end 32775
- part 2 start 32776 size 9044 end 41819
- Partition table ok.
- Linux version 0.99-47 (root@softland) 12/14/92 19:41:34
- HD: read_intr: status = 0x5b
- HD: read_intr: status = 0x80
-
- locks up here...
-
- I even tried turning off the turbo button, but still the same
- story except I get a few more HD errors/resets.
-
- Is the hard disk just to slow for the 386-40 or am I missing
- something???
-
- Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.
-
