- There aren't too many times I have to disagree with Toby, but this time I think
- he missed something.
-
- A sync DCE puts out clocks on 15, 17 and takes in one on 24, sometimes.
-
- A sync DTE accepts clocks on 15 and 17, sometimes putting out on 24.
-
- Assuming you want to interconnect two DTEs, by the use of the terminology, and
- that you have one DTE which provides a clock on pin 24; this is the only clock
- available for your null modem cable. In this case, your clocking looks like:
-
- DTE 1 DTE 2
-
- P24 ------>----------- (Ext TxC)
- |
- P15 ------<-----------|------->------- P15 (TxC)
- |
- P17 ------<------------------->------- P17 (RxC)
-
- ie. pin 24 is providing everything.
-
- There are a few systems where you may not get away with the same clock
- on both pin 15 and 17, but you haven't given me quite enough info to comment
- on that. Let me know how this works.
-
- Otherwise, if you don't have a source on pin 24, you need a bona fide modem
- eliminator, which is in essence a sync clock generator. There are some circum-
- stances where a modem eliminator has to resync the RXC clocks edges to the
- incoming data from the other side, usually because of a long cable run producing
- a sloppy waveform coming in.
