- I've had a Dallas Fax internal at home for several months and just put a
- Dallas Fax Pro Plus external on my Unix workstation. I thought that
- this would give me good transfer rates, but in fact the transfer rates
- are low. The problem seems to be that the systems seem to take long
- coffee breaks which really slow things down. When I'm simply logged on
- and interacting I get good transfer speeds (namely fast scrolling and
- all that) except that at intervals everything stops for a while. I
- don't know whether this is a buffer problem, a glitch in the modem
- hardware, or something to do with the way that DF expects the computer
- to implement the compression algorithm.
-
- Here are the details, including a comparison with another system. I
- don't know what modems are on the other system, but in both cases the
- host modems connect at 14.4K and support v4.2bis/v3.2bis. I get the
- same times for both uploads and downloads on each system, so I haven't
- distinguished between them. In both cases the client is a 386DX-40 with
- a DF internal running ProComm Plus and using Zmodem for transfers. The
- SGI host is a 4D/25 running IRIX 4.0.5 and the other is a Sun 4.
-
- SGI+DF external Sun+?
- 19K text file 1200 cps 2700 cps
- 31K GIF file 730 cps 1500 cps
-
- For both files the transfer rate between two DF modems is less than half
- of what I am getting on the other system!
-
- When I start the transfers the rate appears to be quite high, often over
- 3000 cps, but it drops precipitously due to the long pauses. If anyone
- has any ideas on how to tune the system for continuous transfers it
- would be a great help.
-
- I do notice a lot of disk access on the PC during downloads, but since
- the uploads are equally slow and I am using identical software for both
- tests, that does not seem to explain the difference.
