  11. I had posted earlier a notice about a problem I've had with my Scout+
  12. occasionally becoming "silent," not responding to any AT command, or
  13. to +++, i.e., just a blank screen.  The Scout+ is installed in a
  14. Gateway 386sx.  Someone else noted that their Gateway had this problem
  15. (with another brand modem), and a workaround was to type AT commands
  16. in upper case.  I've tried this and it doesn't help.  What does help
  17. is to reboot the machine (CTRL-ALT-DEL, not the reset button).  I'm
  18. curious about this because I've been told that rebooting shouldn't
  19. affect the modem.  My question is therefore: what actually happens to
  20. the COM ports and/or the modem during reboot?  Something must get
  21. reset, because, when the modem falls silent, nothing else works.
