- I had posted earlier a notice about a problem I've had with my Scout+
- occasionally becoming "silent," not responding to any AT command, or
- to +++, i.e., just a blank screen. The Scout+ is installed in a
- Gateway 386sx. Someone else noted that their Gateway had this problem
- (with another brand modem), and a workaround was to type AT commands
- in upper case. I've tried this and it doesn't help. What does help
- is to reboot the machine (CTRL-ALT-DEL, not the reset button). I'm
- curious about this because I've been told that rebooting shouldn't
- affect the modem. My question is therefore: what actually happens to
- the COM ports and/or the modem during reboot? Something must get
- reset, because, when the modem falls silent, nothing else works.
