- The piriform cortex (i.e., the olfactory cortex) has a structure that
- is similar to those of abstract associative-memory models -- I think that
- is the main reason. It might also be easier to study in the laboratory --
- but I'm no expert on that. It does have to do with the sense of smell
- in that the receptors in the nose send information to the olfactory bulb,
- which in turn sends information to the piriform cortex. The piriform
- cortex thus probably has to do with recognizing or learning to classify
- odors.
