- While reading article <1993Jan25.172908.14327@claven.ucar.edu>, I noticed that
- woods@claven.ucar.edu (Greg Woods) said the following:
- >Not if you include the military. Don't forget that almost our entire foreign
- >policy is based on using military force, or diplomacy backed by threat
- >of military force, to subsidize the oil industry. Thus, overall the
- >government policies *do* serve to artificially lower the price of
- >gasoline at the expense of *all* US taxpayers.
-
- The price of gasoline is based on the free flow of oil at market prices. If
- Saddam Hussein decides HE wants to set the world price of oil, then there's a
- problem. It isn't to "subsidize the oil industry" per se; while their sales
- would drop dramatically it's no skin off their nose if the price of gas jumps
- to $3.00/gallon.
-
- But stop and think for a moment what something like that would do to the
- economy. Prices for any product you could name would go through the ceiling
- due to increased transportation costs. People would buy less, corportate
- profits would fall, and workers would lose their jobs. In general, economic
- chaos and destruction.
-
- So, "artificially lower the price of gasoline?" Not really, just maintaining
- prices at a level the market would normally dictate save any punitive taxes
- imposed for financial or philosophical reasons, given a free flow of oil.
