- While reading article <Jan22.185847.33362@yuma.ACNS.ColoState.EDU>, I noticed that
- freedman@cs.colostate.edu said the following:
- >you seem unconcerned about the environmental toll here. Anyways, if
- >supply dwindles, we'll just tear up the alaskan wildlife refuge to get
- >the oil out of there. We'll dig up the rest of the rocky mountains
- >to scrape all the coal out of there. We'll increase off shore drilling
- >and pour more toxic cruid oil into the ocean (increasing the price
- >of fresh seafood, too).
-
- I don't believe this will happen. This seems to be the same "scare tactic"
- used by anti-Amendment 1 folks (e.g. "Oh, no money for schools. We'll
- have to cut all extracurricular activities. Never mind that we just hired
- another administrator for $100,000/year."). The American public as a whole
- make some stupid decisions but they're not necessarily COMPLETE morons.
-
- >Secondly, the oil companies will not try to
- >produce alternative energy at today's gas prices, they'll charge only
- >slightly less (or even more) than what oil will cost THEN because people
- >will become accustom to paying high prices for energy and the energy
- >companies will just capitalize on that.
-
- If people are willing to pay it. It's called a "market economy." If people
- are willing and want to pay $3.00/gallon for their fuel of choice, charge
- $3.00/gallon. If people would buy more at $1.00/gallon and you still make a
- nice profit, the "oil" companies will charge $1.00/gallon.
-
- >(I think I'd rather the government
- >waste my money than have energy company executives buying large foreign
- >islands for personal pleasure with it).
-
- Then by all means send YOUR entire income to the federal government and allow
- them to do what they will with it. I believe that if the president of a
- company feels like buying a foreign island for fun, it's their income, they can
- do with it what they want.
