-
- Yes. It does. Indeed, in many, if not all, parts of the world,
- animals and habitats have been destroyed to make room for agriculture.
-
- In a sense, the destruction of habitat comes closer to "genocide" than
- hunting! To extend this, settlement of land in any form destroys the
- habitat of animals and makes it more difficult for them to survive. I
- certainly haven't seen any herds buffalo roaming in Toronto.
-
- If we turn our attention from food to clothing, it can be argued that
- the avoidance of animal skins is not necessarily a good thing. If you
- didn't kill an animal for its skin, you killed it by putting up a
- polymer factory which crowded-out the animal, ruined its natural
- habitat, poisoned its water, etc., etc.
-
- Do you use metal in any form? Forks? Computers? Strip mining is
- *devastating* to the environment.
-
- Do you use electric power? Nuclear power may have long-term
- ramifications we don't yet understand. Hydroelectric power is also
- devastating to habitats.
-
- In the end, living things *compete*. They compete for food, space,
- water, air, and any other resource required for life. Ultimately,
- the question is:
- Do you wish to compete? (i.e.: Do you wish to live?)
-
- Pretty easy choice. After all, even dumb animals have an instinct
- for survival...

- P.S.: Note that this discussion is in a talk.* group. It should be
- immediately obvious that there is no right answer. Otherwise
- it would be in soc.* or sci.*. If you really like feeling
- guilty about things, go to confession or something.
