  13.  After a few days of not very much happening except for almost
  14.  imperceptible thawing, we had what was supposed to be moderate
  15.  rain, but turned out to be snow.

  17.  Then last night it _rained_.  My lawn is now clear but for the
  18.  remains of the shovelled snow alongside the drive.  The never-
  19.  shovelled sidewalk across the street has reappeared.  And the
  20.  pool cover had so much rain water on it, it was in danger of
  21.  overflowing - physics dictates that the water level _under_ the
  22.  cover is as high as that on top, so an overflow would be a mix
  23.  of rainwater and a chemical mix that is OK for us to swim in
  24.  but may not be released into the creek at the back of our lot,
  25.  so overflow must be prevented (besides, God knows what would
  26.  happen to the cover and the timber lengths that hold it down).
  27.  Since the portable pump and its discharge hose were still
  28.  buried in the snow, this morning saw the spectacle of me pouring
  29.  pails of hot water on the snow, hose and pump to thaw things out,
  30.  then, when that didn't work too well, resorting to dumping the
  31.  pump into a pail of hot water to make it thaw _itself_ out.
  32.  Then I had to break a hole in the ice sheet floating on top of
  33.  all that new rainwater so that I could drop the pump through
  34.  and start what will probably be about two days of removing
  35.  the rainwater from the cover.

  37.  The above submitted for the entertainment of Easterners who
  38.  have probably never engaged in just these activities.
