- Thanks for the budget info. To be fair, the $50 000 I quoted was
- only for the city of Vancouver. The budget for the whole region,
- though, is under one million, I'm sure.

- I'll answer your P.S. for the benefit of those who have never seen
- this (i.e Vancouverites :-) :-))

- In Ottawa (and presumably in other cities which get a fair bit of snow)
- fire hydrants have a metal rod attached to them. The rod sticks up
- more than a metre above the fire hydrant. At the top is a small octagon.
- The whole thing is painted a bright colour (orange as far as I
- remember). Not surprisingly, this is done so that the fire department
- can find the hydrant after it snows. (something you would appreciate
- if your house was on fire!)

- I seem to recall that there are also tall markers at the edge of
- some curves in rural areas, so that the snowplows know where the
- road is supposed to be.
