- Plastics do leach [note spelling] chemicals from landfills if they are
- buried with many very common solvents. Check out the paper trail for your
- local landfill, examining what kinds of solvents are dumped there, before
- you decide your polystyrene meat tray isn't going to leach styrene into
- the groundwater.

- The weight percentage is always trotted out by plastics advocates. Plastic
- is very light compared to most other discards. Landfills don't fill up from
- the _weight_ of the discards, but from their _volume_. Estimates from the
- admittedly biased American Paper Institute hold that 20-30% of landfill
- _volume_ is taken by plastic.
