- I don't know whether the following have anything to do with Austin Kerr's
- problems, but his query reminds me to post 2 or 3 hard-won rules about
- running DR DOS. Some of this relates to how DR DOS interacts with Norton
- Utilities 6, not NB, but still may be helpful, and may apply to similar
- utility packages.
-
- 1) DO NOT run fastopen if you use Norton Utilities. This goes for MS DOS
- also. Could trash your hard disk when you run NU. (P.S., on my system
- FASTOPEN runs automatically, even without CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT
- invocation. You can find out by running FASTOPEN from the DOS prompt, and
- seeing whether it claims to be running already. Re-boot immediately of course.
- If either DR DOS or your BIOS is running FASTOPEN without your consent,
- put the line "FASTOPEN=0" in your CONFIG.SYS.)
-
- 2) LIKEWISE, DO NOT use DR DOS's DELWATCH utility. It is very nice,
- and I don't want to undermine its reputation. BUT with NU's Speedisk and
- perhaps other utilities, it seems quite dangerous, so you must choose.
-
- 3) More specifically NB-related: I am just noticing today that SHARE seems
- to interfere with some IBID operations. Most noticeably, I was getting the
- message "NBBIB.TPL not found" at points in the operation where IBID was
- trying to use this file in a second way (like generating a bibliography
- with the T for Template format). SHARE is supposed to facilitate sharing,
- but doesn't always seem to do so, even when I up the number of files it expects
- to keep track of. The reason this is especially important with DR DOS, is that
- if you want to use TASKMAX for task-switching, SHARE is required. I was alread
- y beginning to migrate toward running NB 3.1 under Windows 3.1 (even in
- Standard Mode, with my mere 2 megs of memory) when I noticed that I
- ended up with exactly the same ammount of available memory inside NB
- when loaded from Windows, as when loaded from TaskMax. But this
- problem with SHARE convinces me all the more to use Windows, which
- apparently does not require SHARE. (Tell me if I'm wrong, anyone, but
- it is working so far and my Windows 3.1 manual says nothing about SHARE at
- all.)
