  13. I'm currently having problems with a Super5 printer, or EP-2400A
  14. (is the latter the printer's second name?).
  15.  
  16. It supports two operation modes, IBM Proprinter and Standard
  17. (Epson compatible codes). Italics are applicable only when the
  18. printer is in the Standard mode. Yet, the inital settings are
  19. those of an IBM Proprinter, and so is the driver, which is
  20. perfectly suitable, except that it ignores the "<Esc>4" character
  21. string - which is sent for italics (I know, I know, the latter is
  22. only applicable when in Epson mode).

  24. I have a couple of questions in this respect:
  25.  
  26. 1.  Is anyone familiar with the above printer? Is there an
  27. adequate driver for it (apart from the one for IBM Proprinter,
  28. which does not give much room for all the pyrotechnics Super5
  29. offers)?
  30.  
  31. 2.  Is it possible to switch the printer from IBM Proprinter mode
  32. to the "Standard" (i.e., Epson) mode via software code (I know
  33. it's possible via change of DIP switch settings)?
  34.  
  35. 3.  When I embed an Escape inside the printer driver (via ASCII
  36. 16, which outputs a sort of a right-turning triangle), the
  37. printer ignores the rest of the Escape sequence, printing the
  38. rest of the sequence as if it were a normal character string;
  39. however, when I input it as "real" <Esc>, namely, by holding the
  40. Shift and Alt keys together while pressing 27 on the numeric
  41. keypad, the rest of the sequence is properly interpreted and
  42. implemented. Is there an obvious reason for the printer (or for
  43. NB) to act in this manner?
  44.  
  45. 4.  Is it possible to use this printer to print ITALICIZED
  46. Hebrew? (This is, of course, intended for Hebrew users).

  48. To summarize the above, my main problem is whether it's possible
  49. to shift a printer from one operating mode (IBM ProPrinter) to
  50. the other (Standard, Epson) via software, or perhaps such a
  51. legerdemain is usually out of the question when it comes to dot
  52. matrix printers... The second mystery is why an Escape input as
  53. ASCII 16 sometimes ceases to be effective, whereas a real Escape
  54. character embedded inside a .PRN file serves its purpose well.

  56. I will appreciate any pointers, even from those of you who are
  57. not familiar with the above brand name I mentioned.
