- Peter's inquiry is appropriate. Two experiences. Houghton Miflin college
- division for my textbook wants ascii or wp files written according to precise
- instructions. I viewed that process--that is, the precise instructions
- part--more of the publisher's task and not the authors' tasks. My editor,
- without asking, agreed, and told me (us--Mansel Blackford is my co-author) not
- to worry about all of the details of A heads and B heads and the like; such was
- the responsibility of the publisher.
-
- I also work with Ohio State University Press as a series editor. Costs are
- going out of sight, and former subsidies have disappeared. Authors are not
- expected to produce camera ready copy, but I think there are some pretty strict
- expectations, like only one space between a period and the next sentence. As
- an old typist, I automatically put in two spaces, so that poses a problem for
- me.
-
- Because of enormous costs of book publishing, and shrinking markets as a
- result, University presses would like to go to electronic publishing and
- publishing on demand, but are restrained from doing so, I am told by folks in
- the business around the coutnry, by the tenure system--that such books would
- not be viewed favorably by tenure committees.
