- As I posted a while back, I'm making a sojourn from my frigid environs in
- Boston, MA to Los Angeles at the end of February. Several people were
- kind enough to send me lists of decent breaks. Since I think that trying
- to bring my 8'3" longboard on the plane would be risky at best (it's
- hardly overhead luggage-rack material) or tragicomical at worst (visions
- of Three Stooges skits come to mind), I'm going to need to rent a
- longboard while I'm out there. My shortboard experiences have mostly been
- unpleaseant/unsuccesfull due to my neophyte surfer status (at 28 yrs. old)
- so I'm looking specifically for places that would rent me a longboard.
- Thanks in advance for your e-mail jmeacham@world.std.com.

- In the I-can't-beleive-how-goddam-cold-it-is dept., I got a chance to try
- out my christmas gifts (a hood, booties, gloves) in Ocean City, Maryland
- over the weekend and early this week. My primary memory of the experience
- is COLD. I guess a 4/3 suit is a little thin for 39F water, no matter how
- many cool (warm) accessories you've got. The surf was variable
- throughout, starting strong on Friday then dieing out toward monday. At
- it's best it was chest-high with the occasional shoulder high set, though
- it was mushy from saturday on. The offshore wind on Friday made for some
- decent rides, but because OC is all beachbreak, it was tough catching
- anything. By monday it was knee-high or less, fun only to me and my
- longboard (hey, I know it's uncool, but if you live north of Hatteras,
- only longboarders get a chance to surf much).
-
- BTW, has anyone caught the new pepsi commercial, the one with the graphic
- "MINISTERS WHO SURF"? Quite a suprise to me since I thought I was the
- only one (well, almost one, I'm still in Seminary). The guy in the
- commercial must be a Unitarian, too. Can't imagine a Presbeterian busting
- out with some decadence the likes of laying around in the ocean all day
- praying to the wave-gods (on the other hand, the butt-numbing experience I
- had in OC last week might just appeal to a Calvinist!!)
-
- Also, what are the ocean temps in the LA area? Should I bring my 4/3 and
- accessories, or will a spring suit suffice (remember, 60F is *tropical*
- for a New England surfer).
