  12. Someone asked which book and on which page "the promises" are
  13. to be found.

  15. I'm sure there are to be found promises in many books; we could
  16. always take a look at any politician's platform.
  17.  
  18. And there are many promises to be found in the Big Book,
  19. "Alcoholics Anonymous."  Some are repeated more than once.

  21. For instance, the first promise is not on page 83, as many people
  22. think, but even earlier, right back to the title page.

  24. "Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men
  25. and Women have Recovered from Alcoholism"
  26.  
  27. That's a promise.  And then the first sentence of the first
  28. page of the first forward repeats that promise.

  30. "We, of Alcoholics Anonymous, are more than one hundred men
  31. and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state
  32. of mind and body."

  34. To me, that is the most important promise in the book; more
  35. important even than the list which is found after step 9.
  36. I am promised that I can recover from alcoholism.  And I can
  37. say that promise has been fulfilled in my life.  I am recovered
  38. from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body.

  40. The secodn promise I know of follows immediately after the
  41. first.

  43. "To show other alcoholics PRECISELY HOW WE HAVE RECOVERED is the
  44. main purpose of this book."

  46. They promise me that they will tell me precisely how they have
  47. recovered.  In other words, they will give detailed instructions.
  48. The implication is that if I follow their instructions, I will
  49. have recovered from alcoholism.
  50.  
  51. Between the two of those promises, we have a pretty powerful
  52. idea.  One that is a lot more powerful than the list of things
  53. I get after step 9.
