  11. Michael Adams raises some interesting questions about assimilation, when
  12. he decribes his view of the natives in Nome.  What does it mean to
  13. "become white, dress white, look white"?  What is fashion, in clothing,
  14. especially when it becomes chic to dress after Raggae types, or the
  15. earlier Nehru jackets?  Is it "fashionable," to be "white"?
  16.  
  17. What about language?  How can people live in an area, and not
  18. speak the vernacular?  If we travel, no, if we LIVE in an area where
  19. people speak French, for instance, how can we survive without learning
  20. and living and speaking in French?

  22. Drugs?  A lot of alcohol might be distinctly American, but wine
  23. is as old as the hills, at least in "the cradle of Western Civilization"
  24. and in the east and far east, if we consider the words of the Torah, and
  25. the existence of retsina in Greece and sake in Japan.  And coke and
  26. marijuana are as old, and were consumed in those areas where they grow,
  27. well before international trade.

  29. Hmm.  Kids with whites.  Women who bear children.  Native women
  30. who bear children to white men.  What's the ratio of men to women?  Do
  31. native men never date or marry white women?  Why is that?  Why is it
  32. more okay for women to "date white" than men?

  34. I agree when Michael says young people need to learn to value
  35. their lives and their culture, instead of ignoring and discrediting
  36. their past...

  38. I prefer to answer the larger question.  What does it mean to be
  39. human, and how can we all, distinct as we are as individuals, learn to
  40. live together peacefully?

  43. "membership in local native corps"?
