  24. I'm not interested in defending myself but the truth, so I'll leave aside
  25. that 'nudnik' discussion. But let's anyway keep facts straight. *I* gave
  26. the quotes for Tanach and Jack posted some earlier scholarly stuff which 
  27. supports (?) your stand. Now, since I'm not any scholar, I can't write pages 
  28. long articles about the usage of some similar words in related languages
  29. (which in fact does neither support nor refute anyone's stand); I can only
  30. try to see the meaning of the word 'almah' from the context where is it 
  31. used. And I also gave you the etymological meanings of 'almah' (hidden)
  32. and 'betulah' (separated). And I really would like to go this discussion
  33. by replying to replies to *my* posts. (Nu, Dov ?)

  35. I'll reply to some other posts on this, but I've been thinking about the
  36. real meaning of 'almah'... To take all quotes into consideration (also
  37. those emphasized by Dov), seems to me that the exact meaning is something
  38. like 'young virgin'. There are clear implications (S'o'S 6:8, Is 7:14 &
  39. Rashi's comment on it) that the word means 'virgin', and Harvey has given
  40. further information on it, but in those quotes where it doesn't seem to 
  41. make sense to use 'virgin' (BTW does it always with 'bethulah' ?), it's
  42. maybe so that the age is emphasized more than the virginity...

  50. Miriam and Yosef were engaged, not married. Yosef was even about to 
  51. forsake Miriam when he saw that she was pregnant, but an angel told 
  52. him not to do that. As to 'almah' in Is 7:14 -- it all depends on
  53. interpretation, and there isn't any proof that the girl would have
  54. been Achaz's or Yeshayah's wife, as many Rabbis explain.
