- I'll attempt to answer Ling Chang's questions and throw in a couple of
- questions as well. Please be aware that I don't have any of the specific
- equipment concerned but I think I'm pretty well up to speed on the issues
- concerned.
-

-
- My understanding is that the SCSI interface on the PAS is essentially a
- full implementation if the Trantor 8-bit SCSI adapter (available separately
- and also as OEM equipment form various vendors including NEC). It should
- work fine with vitually all SCSI CD-ROM drives.
-
- >2) Does the 3401 comes with all the necessary drivers and
- >cables?
-
- I don't know about the cables but the CD-ROM device drivers are always
- specific to the SCSI interface being used. If your PAS doesn't ship with
- CD-ROM drivers then you will probably need to buy the Trantor drivers
- separately. Even if the PAS kit does include software drivers, you may find
- that the included drivers won't let you correctly access CD-Audio with the
- drive as the audio commands differ between brands of drive, so you may need
- to get Toshiba specific drivers from Trantor anyway.

-
- Probably the best supported PC SCSI adaptors in the marketplace currently
- (as well as the priciest) are Adaptecs AHA-1542's (into their version C
- incarnation now I think). They're supported by all the major operating
- systems, but they also seem to be the ones that cause users the most
- problems. In fact I believe that few, if any, problems arise with the
- Adaptec cards used in systems running OS/2, Windows/NT or various flavours
- of Unix, while DOS users are often seen to be seeking assistance with these
- in various usenet newsgroups.
-
- Other well known SCSI adaptors include offerings from Trantor, Ultrastor,
- Future Domain and Western Digital/SMC.
-
-
-
- My questions:
-
- Does the PAS actually ship with CD-ROM drivers in the box, or are these
- only to be found in Media Vision's multimedia upgrade kits? Do the supplied
- drivers only correctly support NEC drives or are other brands referenced in
- the documentation?
-
- Does SMC (formerly Western Digital) still produce PC SCSI cards? I use a
- WD7000 FASST card which I'm quite happy with. It performed very well when I
- was evaluating it with NEC's CDR-74 (much better than NEC's Trantor produced
- interface). My second WD7000 doesn't seem to want to talk to any connected
- SCSI devices though, and I'd like to get it fixed if possible. Any
- suggestions?
