- I have a CDROM drive which I use under 386bsd UNIX. I'm interested in
- buying an Encyclopedia CDROM but before I do I would like to know what
- is on such CDs and if I will be able to make use of them under UNIX.
-
- First, I know that these CDs will not provide UNIX accessible programs
- (let alone 386bsd ones) but I feel capable of writing access software
- myself (that is half the interest in buying one). I know that such
- CDs may be for MPC or some such "standard" but this does not
- necessarily exclude the use of the information on them under other
- operating systems. So yes I am looking at buying standard
- encyclpedias (e.g Grolier or similar) that have been written for PCs
- (DOS or Windows) and writing software to access it.
-
- My first question is a general one about CD encyclopedias. What sort
- of things are on them (irrespctive of the method of access). Are
- they just an alphabetic list of entries (people, places, concepts,
- inventions etc?) or is it sectioned into areas, e.g. gazeteer, people,
- etc? (I know these depend on the actual encyclopedia but I would like
- to know about any one currently on sale).
-
- My next questions are about the format of the encyclopedia CDs. I
- assume they are all ISO9660 format but what is the format of the files
- on the disk:
-
- - Are they simply text, image (e.g. gif or tiff) and sound files ?
-
- - Is there an index file(s)? What format is it in?
-
- - Is the information encoded in some way. (This may not be just to
- stop people copying the information, but (as on the OED CDROM) for
- compression so more can fit on the disk.)
-
- - If you currently have any encyclopedia CD please could you check it's
- format (using DOS is fine).
- - can you find your way round the disk to directories that obviously
- contain information about different aspects of the information on
- the CD?
- - Do the file names give you any hint to their contents?
- - Can you 'more' the files and find text in them?
-
- I have seen similar questions in this newsgroup before but I haven't
- yet seen any answers, I suspect that is because no one has yet
- worried about this issue.
-
- If I get responses I will summarise them.
-
- many thanks
