- Grant stretches and yawns. "My mother told me something awful today.
- A friend of hers at work has a son who just tested for the GATE program
- at his elementary school, that's for gifted students by the way, what's
- called an 'accelerated program' in other places.
-
- "Anyway the score to get in is 90 out of 100, he scored 97.
- However, he didn't get in because he's a caucasian male with married
- parents and not on welfare. THOSE students have to score 98 to get in.
- Now, is that the worst thing you've ever heard? When I was in a GATE
- program in elementary school, I had to score 95 on a test, I scored
- 98. The school system wanted the teacher to lower her standards for
- 'minority' students. She refused, G-d bless her. And BTW, we had an
- integrated class.
-
- "To get back to the subject, is the current policy fair or right?
- Not in my mind. The mother's fighting about it right now with the
- school board. If she needs someone to help picket, I'm there.
- This is just a stupid policy and is discrimmination no matter how
- anybody wants to put it."
-
- Grant looks down and sees a couple of soapboxes. "Oops.
- Hang on." He steps down and kicks them out of the way and goes
- back to his table.
-
- "Okay, I've had my rant, and sorry to have gone on so long.
- I just picked four shopping bags full of lemons off a tree in my
- backyard. Anyone want to help make some buttery lemon bars?"
