- Hi Bill:
-
- With regards to throwing your new boomerang, I'll try to answer
- some of the questions you had with answers that have worked
- for me.
-
- - The force of throw:
- I find it best to go with your own throwing speed. This is
- really dependant on your strength and the weight of the
- boomerang. I've got a whole gammot of light and heavy ones,
- and I throw each of them with separate throwing power.
-
- - Spin imparted on the 'rang:
- Again, go for your own style. I see guys throw them with the
- elbow pointing outward, and I see guys throw them with the
- elbow pointing back at them. I prefer the elbow pointing back
- at me because I can usually get a greater spin on the 'rang.
- This is really good for stability of flight!
-
- - Angle of throw above the horizon:
- I prefer to throw slightly above the horizon. I notice that the
- higher that I throw, the lower it will be when it returns to me.
- Likewise, if I throw it low (at the horizon), it will climb and
- come down on me during my catch. Decide for yourself. Some
- trick throws are dependant on this one.
-
- - Angle of throw from vertical:
- I personally like to throw about 75 to 80 degrees above side-arm.
- This usually gives a good flight pattern. However, depending
- on how the boomerang is made, it might have either a straight
- out and back in flight, or it might have a very circular flight
- pattern (my choice). I notice that the more sidearm I throw, the
- more likely it is to go straight out, then straight back at me. True
- sidearm is VERY BAD!!! It can easily get out of control and ruin
- a perfectly good 'rang (I should know).
-
- - Angle to the wind:
- I prefer to have the wind blowing in the ear opposite my throwing
- arm. I am right handed, thus I prefer to have the wind blowing
- in my left ear. The reason being, I can relax my throwing because
- the wind will carry the 'rang back to me.
-
- I find the most difficult to control is the wind (obviously).
- However, all factors weigh in fairly equally. Just practice,
- practice, practice (always with the same boomerang) until you
- are comfortable. I make my own, and it usually takes a good
- month before I can master them. I also like the heavier 'rangs,
- because they are less likely to get forced around by the wind.
- I also throw next to Lake Erie -- it's very windy! I hate
- plastic 'rangs!
-
- Like you I also want to get out and throw my mine. I miss
- the warm sunny weather.
-
- Take care and good luck!
