  36. From the one anencephalic baby, we could have harvested 1 heart, 2
  37. lungs, 2 kidneys, a liver suitable for ressection to provide
  38. transplants for as many as 3 others, bone marrow, and 2 corneas.
  39. Transplant recipients had been identified with tissue matches for the
  40. heart, both lungs, both kidneys, and 2 liver sections. Bone marrow had
  41. not been matched yet. Neither had corneas, but they are relatively
  42. easy to match.

  44. Since people who call themselves Pro-Life took steps to halt any organ
  45. donations until after brain death, this is the outcome:
  46. The recipients for the heart, both lungs, 1 kidney and 1 liver section
  47. are now dead. The other kidney, liver, and bone marrow recipients are
  48. still waiting and hoping. The corneas were eventually used.

  50. This is why it's wrong to take medical decisions into the courts.
  51. Here's some info for you.
  52. An anencephalic baby has no brain above the brain stem. The brain stem
  53. is enough to maintain "legal" life (i.e. no brain death) until other
  54. body systems fail completly. There is zero chance for survival. None.
  55. Zip. Nada. At most, we can keep the baby alive for a few days, and
  56. cost the parents a few hundred thousand dollars. By the time brain
  57. death occurs, and the "Pro-Life" people decide it's Ok to donate the
  58. organs, they are not usable. 
  59. So, you and your "Pro-Life" friends can and should consider yourselves
  60. responsible for the deaths of 4 children. Born, wanted, otherwise
  61. healthy children who needed a transp
