- A few years ago, I was spending two months traveling around Europe, from England
- to Ukraine, and (it seems) most places in between. I stopped in Geneva for a
- week to visit some close friends.
-
- Geneva (and Switzerland) is not cheap. My friends took me and the neighbor down-
- stairs out to dinner and spent a bundle, and it was just simple Chinese food.
-
- A couple days later, my friends and I drove to the small town of Gruyere, where
- they make the cheese of the same name. We wandered around looking at the shops
- and at the old buildings and decided to have lunch at an attractive restaurant
- which overlooked the valley and the monestary and the sheep on the hillside and
- so forth. It was a pleasant lunch. My friends drink a bit more than I do, so
- we ended up with two empty bottles of wine at the end of the meal.
-
- I decided to pick up the check, and gave the waiter my Visa card. He came back
- with the reciept for SF256. Well, a Swiss Franc was ~$0.78. A little moment to
- multiply and I managed to supress a gasp, signing the tab.
-
- This has given me perspective on going to lunch or dinner in this country. All
- I have to do is think of my $200 lunch.
