- Since a couple of folks have asked for an update of Colorado addresses, I
- thought I'd post the letter I sent (am sending, will send ;-) with my
- holly-day cards. It starts with an Oregon update, and continues with
- Colorado information -- a compilation from posts here and in other
- newsgroups and stuff I've read in print elsewhere. I don't have a
- products list yet (other than Coors - bleh).
-
- What appears below is a draft -- I don't have the final version of the
- letter translated, but the important thing is the address list (towards
- the end). Hope this is helpful for folks...

- Dear Friends and Family -
-
- YAY!!! We did it! Measure 9 went down, 57% - 43%! What a party we had
- election night. Everyone kept walking around with dazed expressions
- saying "I've never voted for so many people who won before!" Of course, we
- are all disppointed about one person who got re-elected, Senator Bob
- Packwood, but... our state and local elections turned out quite well
- overall.
-
- In addition to our success with Measure 9, the week after the elections
- the State Court of Appeals ruled that the OCA's 1988 Ballot Measure 8 was
- unconstitutional. Measure 8 overturned then- governor Goldschmidt's
- executive order banning discrimination of lesbians and gay men. So we had
- 2 major victories within 2 weeks -- what a blast!
-
- I'd like to thank all of you who responded to my requests for support and
- assistance. The phone calls, cards and donations made all the difference.
- I appreciate your care and concern! Please feel free to call on me for
- the same should anything like this ever arise in your area.
-
-
- Other election results were not so encouraging. In Colorado, Measure 2
- passed by a margin of 53% - 47%. I mentioned this measure briefly in my
- original letter, and am convinced that a boycott of the state will have
- the same results as the Arizona reinstatement of MLKing Day. Here is the
- text of the measure:
-
- Neither the State of Colorado, through any of its branches or
- departments, nor any of its agencies, political subdivisions,
- municipalities or school districts, shall enact, adopt or enforce
- any statute, regulation, ordinance or policy whereby homosexual,
- lesbian or bisexual orientation, conduct, practices or
- relationships shall constitute or otherwise be the basis of, or
- entitle any person or class of persons to have or claim any
- minority status, quota preferences, protected status or claim of
- discrimination. This section of the Constitution shall be in all
- respects self-executing.
-
- The real issue of the measure is the "claim of discrimination" clause.
- Fundamentalist groups like the CFV and OCA say that the "militant
- homosexual agenda" is working for affirmative action quotas for gays and
- lesbians. This is patently untrue.
-
-
- Creative ways to help fight Measure 2
-
- +++ Boycott Colorado-made products (yes, put Coors back on the list of
- things *not* to buy!). Many people feel uncomfortable with a boycott; I
- intend to support the boycott and contribute money to the organizations
- who are working to overturn Measure 2.
-
- +++ Encourage your friends and family in Colorado to support and work for
- only hate-free companies, to protect them from the out-of-state boycott.
- They should be able to get this information much more easily than those of
- us out-of-state. Make sure to tell your in- state friends that there is
- nothing personal in the boycott, but that those of us out-of-state have
- only one effective way to make our dismay known.
-
- +++ Send your financial support to the organizations who are fighting to
- overturn Measure 2:
-
- Colorado Legal Initiatives Project (CLIP)
- PO Box 4447
- Denver, CO 80201
- (303) 830-2100
-
- Project VisAbility
- PO Box 1823
- Boulder, CO 80306
- Project VisAbility has postcards available with information
- about the boycott ($1 for 5 cards + $1.50 p/h).
-
- Equal Protection Campaign (EPOC)
- PO Box 300476
- Denver, CO 80203-0476
- (303) 839-5540
-
- Boycott Colorado
- PO Box 300158
- Denver, CO 80203-0158
- (303) 399-6015, 377-0160
-
- Christians for the Advancement of Human Rights
- (303) 442-5059
-
- +++ Cancel your Colorado travel plans. Tourism is the state's #1
- industry (ski in Oregon instead!). Contact the following organizations
- and let them know why you won't be visiting Colorado for a while:
-
- Colorado Office of Tourism
- 1625 Broadway, Suite 1700
- Denver, CO 80202
- (303) 592-5510, (800) 433-2656
-
- Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry
- 1776 Lincoln Street, Suite 1200
- Denver, CO 80203
- (303) 831-7411
-
- +++ Contact the governor's office to express your outrage:
-
- Governor Roy Romer
- 136 State Capitol Building
- Denver, CO 80203
- (303) 866-2471
- Governor Romer has been speaking out against Measure 2 since
- long before the election.
-
- +++ If you went to school in Colorado, contact your alma mater and tell
- them that you will withhold all future donations until Measure 2 is
- repealed.
-
- +++ If you are a member of an organization that holds conferences around
- the country, urge the officers of the organization to call the Governor's
- Office to let them know they will not bring their conference to Colorado
- until Measure 2 is repealed. The state has already lost several large
- conferences due to the passage of Measure 2.
-
- +++ Hold a fundraiser for any/all of the organizations working to repeal
- Measure 2.
-
- +++ Ask your city council to approve an official Colorado Boycott.
- Atlanta, GA was the first city to do this, and several other cities have
- requested copies of their ordinance. Seattle just approved a similar
- measure this week!
-
- +++ Stay informed. For those of you with Internet access, there are 2
- mailing lists available; contact me for details.
-
- +++ Spread the word to everyone you know!
-
-
- The bigger picture. Contact your Senators and Representatives to tell
- them that you want them to support the national gay and lesbian rights
- bill, which Clinton has promised to sign.
-
-
- Thank you again for your attention. If we all work to change inequities
- everywhere, we all win.
