  21. "reasonable."

  23. I conduct a discussion group at Avenel, NJ's prison for sex offenders. One man
  24. described his "crime" for us on Sunday night.   His stepson came into the
  25. room while he, the step-father, was watching an adult het film.  The son
  26. stopped to watch for a while too.  Each noticed the other's boners.  In
  27. time, the step-father masturbated.  The step-son did so too.   Soon they
  28. moved closer and fondled each other to orgasm.

  30. This happened again on another occasion, once.

  32. The step-son then told his mother, who was scandalized and told the police.
  33. The step-father is now divorced and likely to serve 12 years of his 18-year 
  34. sentence.

  40. A court-appointed lawyer told the step-father that he would end up in
  41. Rahway, a much meaner place, if he reported the events as they actually 
  42. happened, that he needed a diagnosis of "compulsive," so that he could go
  43. to a more comfortable prison (Avenel).  So he lied and said that he had
  44. penetrated the anus of the "boy" twice.   That made him compulsive and 
  45. eligible for the "nicer" jail.  It's nicer in that all the people there did 
  46. similar "crimes" and are thus not likely to push you around for being 
  47. a child-molester, as at Rahway, where only murderers and extortioners are
  48. considered "good guys."  But at Rahway, persons serve typically only 
  49. one-third of their sentences before parole.  At Avenel, they almost 
  50. always serve two-thirds.  I.e., if you want a short sentence, blow someone's
  51. brains out or steal all her money.  If you want a long sentence, fondle
  52. a 17-year-old consenting person.

  54. What if the 17-year-old had become 18 a night after the second fondling?

  56. Even then he would have still be 18 and this would have been a heinous
  57. crime!

  59. I am not talking about life behind the Cotton Curtain where I was brought 
  60. up (nee Alabama, 1936); I am talking about New Jersey, which recently became 
  61. the third state to have antidiscrimination protection for lesbigays!

  63. This man's case is not rare.
