I've been on various discussion-oriented BBS's for almost ten years
now, but I didn't come in contact with the internet for a while
because my college was too long ago and the computer places I worked
for too small time.  But I started seeing some of the BBS people rave
about it.  Soon some local public-access *NIX systems started popping
up, and about four years ago I called one and typed rn because I'd
heard people mention it when talking about newsgroups.

Unfortunately this public-access system only had a very small number
of newsgroups, and as the others got news from *it*, so did they.
alt.sex was one of them, and was it ever full of jerks.  But if I did
a search through it looking for the words lesbian, gay, bisexual, once
in a while I'd actually see something with some worth to it rather
than just the rantings of phobic college students and K*ld*s and so
on.  And in these messages were occasional references to soc.motss.

And to cut the story short, these days I pay for (it's pretty cheap at
$110/year) this internet account so I can read soc.motss and anything
else I want, do ftp, etc.  Unfortunately it just crashed on me and
destroyed something like 300 pieces of mail.  :-(
