  24. I'm also very sensitive to this sort of suggestion.  A few
  25. years ago on nutnoise this topic was hammered to death.  The
  26. 'feminist concensus' at that time (Now, note, this is ON THE
  27. NET, and that's what said people represented themselves
  28. as!!!  I surely know that they aren't representative of
  29. all "feminists" any more than I represent all white males)
  30. was that NOT doing it was some kind of harrassment or assault.

  32. I took issue with this, to the result that I was branded
  33. a woman-hater, rapist, and other nasty things, simply
  34. because I refused to act like I was a criminal.  This
  35. is inextricably related to the attacks on men on the
  36. like 'all men are potential rapists' that come and go,
  37. and can only have the same effect.

  39. I have a much simpler objection, though, in that such
  40. actions only confirm the fears of the person being avoided, while
  41. they will have no effect on the real criminal.
  42. What are you going to do when the next guy doesn't cross the street?
  43. If the jerk is determined or nuts, nothing much, unless you've trained
  44. to protect yourself.  If you have learned to protect yourself,
  45. then you'll generally be aware of people's positions regardless
  46. of whether or not they're across the street, and you will
  47. have already reacted accordingly.

  49. Why ask all men to act like convicted criminals when it won't
  50. do a wee bit of good?
