  30. mathematicians (don't remember name..started with "T") showed the
  31. Earth was round and estimated diameter using the relative positions of
  32. shadows at the bottoms of wells.  DESPITE this marvelous scientific
  33. work, the general belief that the world was round did NOT become
  34. accepted until some damn-fool sailors went out and PROVED it.  That
  35. was my whole point...that otherwise perfectly intelligent people hold
  36. to certain views until some daredevil goes out and DEMONSTRATES the
  37. contrary, usually by doing something that everyone tells him will get
  38. him killed!

  40.     Sorry, but sometimes I despair at getting a net.point across
  41. with any attempt at subtlety or metaphor.  Loosen up a little and
  42. avoid too much literalness! :-)
  43.     Anyway, time to pack the bags and the presents, go tune up the
  44. sleigh, and file some flight plans! :-)***
